September 2, 2008

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 7:30 PM with six members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The treasurer mentioned that with the renewal of memberships, there were several donations included.  One member had enclosed a donation to be used for the purchase of an updated version of Family Tree Maker.  He had sent the genealogy room a copy of his family history made with the program, but the genealogy room’s program was not able to open it as their copy was too old.  A motion was made and seconded to purchase a 2009 version of the program.  The motion carried.

The president mentioned that he had talked to Jeff Lindsey about having a booth on September 9, 2008 to sell Society books during the Flatboat Launching.  He has a tent and several members are going to help.

The president mentioned the two George Honig plaques at the Lower Landing had been refurbished.  They will be easy to read at the launching ceremonies next week.

There was a discussion about the memory books the Society was getting for a recently deceased member.  The president mentioned that he hadn’t received the Birdseye book yet.  There was a note from the Genealogy room about the book “Indiana’s Lincolnland” that had many of the Lincoln pictures from the collection of O.V. Brown.  We could purchase the “Indiana’s Lincolnland” from the library for $17.34 for a memory book for the member.  A motion was made and seconded to purchase the book.  The motion carried.

The president said that he had been quoted in the “Indiana’s Lincolnland” book, but that the woman he had talked to did not tell him she was going to use the information in a book.  He had mentioned a book for the woman to check for information, but apparently she did not do so and some of the statements were not correct.

There was a question about when was Sunset Hill Cemetery opened.  It was mentioned that in old newspaper articles they were still having burials at the Old Rockport Cemetery located behind the present Superintendent’s office and also at the New Cemetery (Sunset Hill) in 1899.

The president mentioned upcoming genealogy events.

It was mentioned about the C. T. Baker books as they would be a good item to sell at the launching.  The president is going to contact the member who was putting the books together.

A member mentioned the book about Lincoln’s Flatboat that was written by Bess Ehrmann.  It was discussed about having the book reprinted to sell at the flatboat launching.  A motion was made and seconded to reprint 50 copies if the library gives us permission to take the book from the library.  The motion carried.

After locating the Society’s copies of the book, it was decided to combine the two books for reprint.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.

The next meeting will be November 4, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
