November 4, 2008

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:30 PM with six members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

It was reported that the memory book, "Indiana’s Lincolnland" had been purchased.

Since the last meeting, the booklet, "When Lincoln Went Flatboating from Rockport" by Bess Ehrmann was reprinted to sell at the Journey of Remembrance launching.  A definite price needed to be set before it was to be added to the list of books for sale.  A motion was made and seconded to charge $2.00 for the booklet and $1.50 for shipping and handling.  The motion carried.

A motion was made and seconded to put an ad in the Spencer County Leader two times - once before Thanksgiving and once after Thanksgiving - to advertise the books we have for sale, with the title "Lincoln Books Make Great Christmas Presents".  The motion carried.  The treasurer will call about placing the ads.

The president mentioned several items that he had received in the mail.  One was from the Society of Indiana Pioneers and they informed us that they have a speaker’s bureau that is available to us.

Another was about the "Indiana Magazine of History" which had a subscription for two years available for $40.00 as there will be a price increase next year.  Upon investigation, it was found that the magazine was formerly included in the price of the membership in the Indiana Historical Society, but last year it was separated from the Society and purchased separately.  A motion was made and seconded to renew the subscription to the magazine for two years at the cost of $40.00.  The motion carried

A member read a note from the parents of Dakota Schmitt.  He had earned the rank of Eagle Scout for his work on the Olde Rockport Cemetery.  They were inviting the Society to his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Sunday, November 9, 2008, at 2:00 PM in the South Spencer School Corporation Board Room.

A motion was made and seconded to order 250 highlighters from Mayne Events with the inscription –

Spencer County Historical Society

Spencer County, Indiana Where Lincoln spent his formative years 1816 - 1830

The motion carried.

It was mentioned that there was a box of  "postcards" that were being sold by the Society which were really reprints of original postcards concerning the history of Rockport and Spencer County.  It was decided that we sell them for $.50 and label the box "Reprints".

The Historian of the Year banquet for 2009 was discussed.  A list of possible nominees was mentioned.  It was decided to table further discussion until the next meeting.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 7:55 PM.

The next meeting will be December 2, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
