February 7, 2012

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:40 PM with 6 members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The treasurer mentioned that she had checked with the State Library about the issues of The Rockport Journal-Democrat, 2006-2010, and The Spencer County Leader, 1999-2006, and 2008-2010 that had been microfilmed.  The library was still going through the boxes and hadn’t found the reels for 2007.  A motion was made and seconded to buy the issues completed and also 2007, if found, for the Genealogy Room.  The motion carried.

A member reported that the microfilms of The Rockport Democrat, 1971-1980, that the Society purchased in 2009 were being used by visitors to the Genealogy Room.

The president had a call from Warrick County concerning the condition of the floor on Boner Bridge.  Warrick County wants to replace the flooring as it is going bad since the original flooring was replaced.  Apparently, Spencer County suggested putting in metal mesh flooring instead of wood.  Warrick County stated that the quote for metal was four times higher than for wood.  The Society feels that it should be replaced with wood to save the integrity of the bridge.

The Historian of the Year Banquet was the next topic of discussion.  The treasurer had contacted The Rockport Inn about catering.

            The menu will be:

                        Marinated pork chops

                        Fried chicken

                        Mashed potatoes/gravy

                        Green beans

                        Combination salad

                        Rolls

                        Tea/Lemonade

The Rockport Inn would furnish plates, napkins, silverware, cups, etc.

The president suggested that we have a cake for dessert, and that we keep the price for the tickets at $15.00.

The Society had tabled the selection of the speaker at the last meeting.  Several names were mentioned as a choice.  It was decided to let the president contact them and see who would be available to talk on matters concerning Spencer County.

The president mentioned that the Lincoln Day Celebration at the Lincoln National Boyhood Memorial was scheduled for Sunday, February 19, 2012, instead of on February 12, 2012, which is Lincoln’s Birthday and the day on which it is normally held.  The change in dates was due to the fact that on February 19, 1962, John F, Kennedy signed legislation making the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City, Indiana, the first national memorial in the state of Indiana.

The president said that, during the Lincoln Day Celebration, wreaths were presented at Nancy Hanks Lincoln’s grave by various organizations and he asked about getting a wreath from the Society.  A motion was made and seconded that the president purchases a wreath – one that could be used over - for the Lincoln Day Program representing the Spencer County Historical Society.  The motion carried.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM.

The next meeting will be March 6, 2012 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
