The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:30 PM with 7 members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given. 

The secretary read a note from a family who had enclosed a donation to the Society.  The Society had used an article their daughter had written in 1973, as a high school class project, about the history of the Rockport Inn.

A discussion then ensued about General James C. Veatch and his various contributions to Spencer County.  At the last meeting, the Society had voted to purchase plaques to be placed on the cannon on the Courthouse lawn that told how it came to be there.  A member had met with the County Commissioners to get approval for the project.  The Commissioners gave their approval on Monday, November 5, 2012.  This will be done at no cost to the county.

A member will now contact Grandview Aluminum Products so they can produce the plaques.  They will also mount them when they are finished.

A member suggested that the Society have a dedication of the plaques several weeks before the annual Historian of the Year Banquet.  There would be several articles in the local papers asking such questions as; “Do you know why this cannon is here?” and “Do you know where it came from?”  This would be a way to promote the banquet and possibly have people attend the dedication which would be held on a Friday afternoon.

The president stated that the Spencer County Youth and Community Center had been reserved for Saturday, April 13, 2013 for the banquet.

After much consideration, a nomination was made and seconded for the Historian of the Year.  The motion carried. 

The president is checking with a speaker to see if he will be available for the above date.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM.

There will be NO meetings in December 2012 or January 2013.

The next meeting will be February 5, 2013 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
