February 5, 2013

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:33 PM with 8 members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The secretary read an e-mail from a member about enjoying the newsletters.  She also had several newspaper articles telling of activities of some members.  She mentioned an article in the recent Evansville Living magazine concerning a book in the process of being published from a manuscript written by George Honig in the early 1900’s.

A member reported he had been contacted by a publishing company wanting to know if the Society would be interested in getting a book published about Spencer County.  He showed the book that was sent as a sample.  While the book was very well made, the Society felt that with the limited funds in the treasury, it would not be feasible, at this time, to do the project.

A member had the Veatch plaques, made by Grandview Aluminum Products, which will be placed on the Courthouse cannon in early March.  A discussion followed about the time to have the dedication before the upcoming Historian of the Year Banquet.  It was tentatively decided to have the dedication on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 12:30 PM.  The president is going to contact people before the next meeting so a definite time can be set.  The president will be in charge of the program.

A member announced he was in the process of revamping the Society’s web site.  He asked if it would be possible to start next month’s meeting early so he could show what has been done on the web site.  The members agreed to meet at 6:00 PM.

The president mentioned the Society had received the Saint Meinrad 150th Anniversary Sesquicentennial Celebration book which had previously been purchased.

Several members informed the Society there was going to be two free showings of the Steven Spielberg film “Lincoln” at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial on Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

The president informed the group of the Lincoln Day Program on Sunday, February 10, 2013, at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.  Two members will present the wreath from the Society at the Nancy Hanks Lincoln gravesite.

There was more discussion on the Historian of the Year Banquet which will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 6:00 PM at the Spencer County Youth and Community Center in Chrisney, Indiana.  A motion was made and seconded to have The Rockport Inn for catering.  The motion carried.  A motion was made and seconded to have the same menu as last year. The president had contacted Bill Emmick to be the speaker at the banquet.  His topic will be the 25th Infantry at the Battle of Shiloh which had men from the Spencer County area (Grandview, Rockport, and Gentryville).

The president asked several members about the Keith Erekson talk at the Willard Library in Evansville.  Mr. Erekson spoke about the Lincoln Inquiry.  It was mentioned that five Society members were in attendance, one even driving down from La Porte, Indiana, just for his talk.
