June 4, 2013

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the President at 6:33 PM with seven members and one guest present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The report on the Historian of the Year Banquet was given.  The consensus was favorable about the banquet even though the attendance was low.  It was decided to table discussion about having further banquets until the Society has given more thought about what can be done to increase attendance.

A member mentioned he would be attending the Meade County Historical Society meeting in Brandenburg, Kentucky to give a presentation on dowsing.  He is going to show materials our Society has; what the Society does and has done.  He is hoping someone from their Society will visit in the future.

Members donated a copy of the DVD “The Why in the Road” which was recently presented at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.  It was sponsored by Preserving the Historic Road, 2012.  Two members are featured in the DVD.  They also donated a DVD containing the names of the Revolutionary War Soldiers that are buried in Spencer County.

A guest mentioned he had done much research using the materials available in the Genealogy Room.

There was some discussion concerning what could be done to encourage younger people to join the Society.

The president had a letter from the 4-H Association asking the Society to sponsor the Genealogy Award this year.  A motion was made and seconded to donate $25.00 for the award.  The motion carried.

A member gave a brief report on the web statistics for the Spencer County History web site.  He also read several e-mails he had received since the last meeting.  One was from the Indiana State Museum wanting an ornament representing Spencer County that would be placed on the State Christmas Tree that is put up in the Museum each November.  A member was going to see what she could get.

The president had been contacted by a Lincoln Impersonator from Owensboro, Kentucky about the possibility of doing a bus tour of Lincoln sites.  The logistics of having such a tour is cost prohibitive for the Society.

A member gave a report on the show at the Lincoln Amphitheater which will begin June 7, 2013.

A motion was made and seconded to purchase a four drawer file cabinet for the Genealogy Room to store materials that belong to the Society.  The present two drawer file cabinet is overflowing.  The motion carried.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:11 PM.

There will be no meeting in July.

The next meeting will be August 6, 2013 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
