April 7, 2015

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at The Rockport Inn.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 5:23 PM with seven members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The secretary mentioned several e-mails and items that she had received.  Several items were received from Will Dawson who is married to a former resident of Grandview, Indiana.  He had included several photos concerning the Grandview School which burned down in 1943, and a Sesquicentennial button from 1968.  The photos were given to a member who mentioned Grandview was updating their local history book and the pictures would be a welcome addition to the book.

A member announced he had talked to the Evansville Bindery about reprinting the two volume set of the History of Spencer County.  The cost for reprinting 100 sets is more money than the Society has in the treasury, so the project will not be done.  The president informed the group that Chrisney was updating their history and were going to have it done digitally.  He was going to see how much it was going to cost them.

There was more discussion about the insurance coverage on the contents of the Genealogy Room.  The president suggested talking to a lawyer about what legal rights the Society has and also inviting the librarian to a meeting to discuss the matter.

It was mentioned that the Spencer family, former residents of Rockport, was in the process of donating a log cabin to the Lincoln Pioneer Village.  The cabin is on family property on the Rough River reservoir in Kentucky.  A member stated that the item was brought up at the last Think Lincoln meeting and the people felt that the cost of moving the cabin was too excessive.

Also mentioned at the Think Lincoln meeting was an item in the local papers stating the State wants to rid itself of the Lincoln Ferry Park at Troy, Indiana.  This is an historic site as it was where Abraham Lincoln would ferry people out to the middle of the river to board steamboats.  It was also one of the first parcels of land registered in Spencer County.  Jeff Lindsey is checking into the ownership of the land before it was given to the State.  Someone mentioned attending a Commissioners meeting.

There will be no meeting in May.

The next meeting will be June 2, 2015 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 5:53 PM.  It was followed by the Historian of the Year Banquet honoring Raymond and Patricia Dawson.
