The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the Vice-president at 6:25 PM with six members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read.  A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes.  The minutes were approved as read.

The treasurer’s report was given.

A member reported on the problem with the Society’s copy machine.  Hoosier Business Machines is going to pick-up the copier on Wednesday, July 8 when they deliver paper to the library.  They are going to give the Society an estimate on the cost of repairing the machine.  A motion was made and seconded to give a member the authority to decide what to do about the machine.  If the cost is too much, he is to see about replacing it.

The vice-president mentioned the following items:

·         Two more stones had been found at the Romine Cemetery on the Power Plant’s property.

·         The Bicentennial stamp goes on sale June 8, 2016.

·         The mural on Main Street in Rockport is underway.

·         The Indiana Historical Society is taking nominations for various awards.  (Our Society could be nominated for an award for being the one to lobby for getting the State Marker program started.)  (A member read an e-mail from a person stating that she would like to nominate the Society for the various things we do.)

·         There is a new book being published by Andrea Neal which contains articles about the State of Indiana.

·         The 4-H Association has requested a donation of $25.00 to sponsor the Genealogy award.  A motion was made and seconded to give the $25.00.  The motion carried.

·         Reminded everyone about the Daniel Grass ceremony to be held at the Rockport Pioneer Cemetery on June 15 at 11:30 AM.  He thanked two members for their help in cleaning the stones and the area.

The secretary read several items she had received.  One was from the Federal Communications Commission telling about a tower that was going to be erected at Holiday World in Santa Claus.

A member said that it was being built by Verizon as Verizon customers have no cell service when they are at Holiday World.

The secretary said that the Society had received an exchange newsletter from the Dubois County Genealogical Society.  We had stopped sending them our newsletter, but since receiving theirs, we put them on our list of exchange societies.  The secretary had noted their wording on membership dues and asked if the Society wanted to change the wording on our membership form.  A motion was made and seconded that we change the wording to state:  New membership dues accepted after May 1 will be applied to the following year.  The motion carried.
