September 4, 2018

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:32 PM with 14 members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The secretary informed the Society she had filed the e-Postcard for non-profit organizations with the IRS for the tax year ending September 1. 2017.  (Correction - This should have been tax year ending 8-31-2018.  The tax year starting date was 9-1-2017.)

The president stated he had talked to the accountant about how the Society would handle the selling of the Spencer County Bicentennial Books since they were under a separate account of the Historical Society.  He was told the filing that had been done as well as the one to be filed in October would satisfy the requirements.  The book publisher will be paying the Indiana tax which was collected when the books were ordered.

The president mentioned several locations still had books for sale.  The book is $49.00 which includes tax.  There is an additional $7.50 mailing fee.

A member had a booklet about the history of the Rockport Trinity Methodist Church which was put out in 1968.

A member reported on the wording on the two plaques the Society is purchasing for the Baker’s Creek Church and Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church.  There still needs to be some revision on the text for each plaque.  He also had prices for the plaques which included installation in concrete.  After some discussion, it was decided to confirm the wording with the churches a final time.  A motion was made and seconded to place the order for the plaques with Schum Monuments of Dale.  The motion carried.

A member informed the Society Sheriff James McDurmon said there was going to be a bicentennial meeting at the Commissioner’s meeting and that might be an appropriate time to present the plaque he had purchase honoring the first sheriff David Edwards.

A member also asked when the Society was going to present the plaques to the churches.  Hopefully, that will be done after a church service before the end of the year.

A member mentioned there will be a program at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial - Lincoln Living Historical Farm honoring Nancy Hanks Lincoln on October 6, 2018, at 2:00 PM.

The upcoming Historian of the Year Banquet was the next item of discussion.  The banquet will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Chrisney, Indiana.  The program will start at 10:00 AM.  The meal will be catered by the Cornerstone United Methodist Women.  The cost for the meal will be $15.00.  Richard Hedrick will be the guest speaker.  The Society plans to decorate on Friday, October 5, 2018, at 5:00 PM.

A member told he was working on monuments for an ancestor, John McCoy.  There will be a dedication of the monuments at the old Gentryville Christian Cemetery, located behind the Methodist Church, on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at 11:30 AM.  The old monuments were found buried several feet deep.

A member also mentioned several items connected with the Lincoln Pioneer Village:

·         Anyone can decorate a Christmas tree for a cabin in the Village.  The trees will be shown in the cabins on the day of the Rockport Christmas Parade December 1, 2018.

·         Organizations can donate money toward the upkeep of a cabin in the Village.  There is a $300.00 minimum.  A plaque will be place on the cabin showing who donated the money.

A motion was made and seconded to donate $500.00 towards the Gentry Cabin.  The motion carried.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM.

The next meeting will be October 2, 2018, at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
