The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

 

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:35 PM with eight members and one guest present.

 

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

 

The treasurer’s report was given. 

 

The president spoke well of Craig Berndt’s talk on the railroad history and his knowledge of the railroads in our area.

 

The president announced 100 Bicentennial books have been ordered.  One-half of the payment was paid with the order with the other half due on receipt of the books.  A report on the books will be given at the next meeting.

 

A member mentioned the South Spencer County School Alumni Association is having their annual reunion and dinner on Saturday, June 8, 2019.  It was suggested that some books be displayed at the reunion.  Also have the books for sale at the June 2nd Chrisney Festival.  It was suggested that a Society membership form be included in each book.

 

When the books arrive, they could be included in the list of books for sale on the Society webpage.

 

The president gave a big “Thank You” to Tom Brauns for all the work he did to organize the Time Capsule.

 

It was mentioned there would be a screening at the Owensboro Community & Technical College of Canadian filmmaker Jared Brock’s documentary, “Redeeming Uncle Tom:  The Josiah Henson Story” on May 13.  There will also be a discussion about Henson’s time in Daviess County at the Owensboro Library on May 8, at 6 PM, led by Kentucky Room Manager Savannah Warren.

 

The church plaques have both been installed - Old Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church & Bakers Creek Baptist Church.  Both churches are over 200 years old.  It will be up to the churches to set up a time for the dedication of the plaques.  The pastor of Bakers Creek Baptist Church was very appreciative of the Society’s donation of the plaque.  A member had pictures to show the locations of the plaques.

 

A member reported a cemetery had been discovered near Providence, Kentucky, with graves dating back to the 1600’s - 1700’s.  The member would like to dowse the cemetery and will try to get permission to do so.

 

A member asked if the Society would consider giving scholarships for history at both high schools in the county.  Another member suggested the Society have someone come to talk about how to set up such a scholarship.

 

The 4-H Association had sent a request to the Society to sponsor the Genealogy award for the upcoming fair.  A motion was made and seconded to give $25.00 to the 4-H Association for the award.  The motion carried.

 

The president asked for considerations for the election of officers.

 

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.

 

The next meeting will be June 4, 2019, at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
